About Us
Herr Backyard Garden Center started in 2003 selling flowers on a piece of green grass carpet in an old abandoned parking lot in Five Corners in Burien, WA. Next they moved into half of the adjacent building. Since that time they have painted the building barn red and have grown bigger and better each year.
Owners, Diane Herr-Lorella and Lisa Herr, state, “We want people to enjoy themselves in a “bit of paradise”. They employ local people including local high school students and they encourage all ages to come browse the shop or attend gardening classes or just have lunch in the garden area. Patients who’ve completed a chemo treatment come in to browse and soak in some garden environment. Nurses come in for a break and family members come in for a gift for a loved one who is in the hospital.
Herr Backyard Garden Center is one of three women-owned businesses on the 90 degree corner of Five Corners. The building right on the corner (northeast of the center) is a woman-owned antique shop while Lipshtick Cafe (a drive up espresso stand located just west of the garden center) is also woman owned.
All plants, shrubs and trees are climatized to be planted at time of purchase. They have already been cold housed in the nurseries for Northwest gardens.
All year round knowledgeable staff welcome questions and the owners are most often found helping customers in the shop. In the spring, master gardeners like Pat Rey come to the center to give classes and garden clubs are encouraged to schedule meetings at the garden center. In summer, staff wear Hawaiian shirts and a barbecue is hosted. Tickets for garden tours are for sale during season and wine tastings are scheduled throughout the year. Winter at the center is magical. Last year customers were delighted by 20 gorgeous themed Christmas trees.
Consultations are available for locations within a 15 minute drive for $60/hour with a minimum half-hour ($30) visit.
